Navigating the Sustainable Housing Market
GBAR's Sustainability Committee invites you to this no-waste event where you will hear from two Boston architects that represent companies with goals of designing homes that not only function on net-zero energy but are also built with sustainable materials. Following the panel, you will take the new course Fundamentals of Sustainable Homes with Craig Foley. Finally, the day will end with a panel of vendors that will discuss how their products and services focus on sustainability.

Stephanie Horowitz AIA, CPHC
Zero Energy Design

As Managing Director of ZeroEnergy Design, Stephanie orchestrates the firm’s portfolio of net-zero energy and Passive House certified projects, with a focus on the residential sector. Recently awarded Boston Home Magazine's Best Sustainable Architect, her work has garnered a design award from the Boston Society of Architects as well as Citation for Sustainable Design. In addition to her role at ZED, Stephanie served on the Massachusetts Design Selection Board as the AIA of Massachusetts' representative and is a founding board member and former President of Passive House Massachusetts. 

Michelle Apigian AIA, AICP, LEED AP, CPHC
ICON Architecture

Associate Principal is an architect, planner and urban designer who combines optimism and pragmatism to design sustainable environments that strengthen communities and celebrate the uniqueness of place.? Her work includes several Passive House certified multifamily project in Massachusetts, with many more in design and construction, as well as numerous LEED and EGC certified projects.  Michelle serves on the Board of several organizations, including Somerville Community Corporation and Passive House Massachusetts.? She is also a member of DOER’s Zero Energy Advisory Committee and a frequent speaker on high-performance design and execution. 

During this panel you will:
• Understand the rapidly emerging green home marketplace in Massachusetts; 
• Learn how to properly market and value “smart” homes including solar panels, high-performance building materials, and cutting-edge technology; and  • Discover the various incentives and funding tools available to homeowners for upgrading their homes with sustainable features

When finished, learners will be able to:
• Identify the characteristics of a sustainable home; 
• Recognize various sustainability programs that go beyond the minimum building code requirements;
• Identify ways to increase a home’s sustainability through improving energy, heat, and water efficiency; and 
• List various sustainable products and systems, based on third-party certifications, that will increase a home’s energy efficiency and sustainability and reduce its impact on the environment. 

Following the course will be a short panel of vendors that focus on sustainability.
