Whether you are selling your home or going through the buying process, working with a REALTOR® comes with significant benefits:
Adherence to a National Code of Ethics
According to the National Association of REALTORS® 2009 Profile of Homebuyers and Sellers, 98% of consumers listed honesty and integrity as the top two most important factors when choosing a real estate agent. REALTORS® must take an oath and must follow a strict national code of ethics which holds them to a higher standard of practice than those required under state law.
This Code was created to protect the public, and it requires REALTORS® to take the necessary steps to eliminate practices which might discredit or dishonor the real estate profession. Agents who hold membership in the REALTOR® organization are subject to disciplinary action for ethical violations committed under the Code, as well as business misconduct that may occur during the property transaction. Consumers can file complaints against REALTORS™ via local associations of REALTORS® if they believe they have been mistreated. Timely and Accurate Market Data and Proprietary Information
Aside from their high ethical standards, REALTORS® distinguish themselves in other ways as well. REALTORS® have access to the most accurate housing market data and proprietary information from the REALTORS® Property Resource database and a staff of nationally-recognized economists. In addition, they have access to timely industry research and economic forecasts; an extensive library of resources on industry issues and effective sales and marketing strategies; and REALTOR®-branded business technologies, including REALTOR.com – the industry’s most popular and powerful online listing tool.
Specialized Designations & Certification Programs
All real estate agents must complete 12 hours of continuing education instruction every two years to renew their licenses. However, agents who are members of the REALTOR® organization have the opportunity to enhance their industry knowledge and further their professional development by attending specialized training programs. These programs enable them to complete certification and designation courses that are available exclusively to REALTORS®. In fact, REALTORS® often commit to higher education, and enroll in courses to acquire advanced training so that they are able to provide consumers with the best information and guidance possible during the home purchase and sales processes.
REALTORS® have exclusive access to over one dozen professional designation and certification programs which offer specialized training that boost an agent’s industry knowledge and business skills. More than one-third of all REALTORS® hold at least one professional designation. Among the designations REALTORS® may obtain are: Accredited Buyer’s Representative (ABR); Certified Residential Specialist (CRS), and Seniors Real Estate Specialist (SRES). Exclusive Use of the REALTOR® Membership Marks
The term REALTOR® is a federally-registered trademark reserved exclusively for members of the National Association of REALTORS®, who often wear the REALTOR® pin and display the REALTOR® block “R” logo on stationery, ads and marketing materials to differentiate themselves from other agents and brokers.
