A recent survey of homeowners across the nation reported that home sellers are more than twice as likely to get their homes sold if they use a REALTOR®. According to survey by HomeGain, 73 percent of the homeowners surveyed used a REALTOR®, and 21 percent of the homeowners surveyed said they tried to sell their home themselves, with 66 percent of those homeowners who used a REALTOR® reporting that they were successful in selling their homes compared to just 30 percent of those who chose the for-sale-by-owner route. To further demonstrate the value of working with a REALTOR®, 22 percent of for-sale-by-owners (FSBO) eventually did use a REALTOR®, and more than half of them were then able to sell their homes too.
“The value of a REALTOR® in a real estate transaction is made strikingly apparent in our 2012 FSBO verses REALTOR® survey of home sellers,” says Louis Cammarosano, general manager of HomeGain. “A qualified REALTOR® understands the dynamics of the market and can better assist home sellers in the pricing and preparation of their homes for sale.” The National Association of REALTORS® 2011 NAR Profile of Homebuyers and Sellers Report reiterates this point finding that FSBO transactions accounted for only 10 percent of U.S. home sales last year. While this is up from a record low of 9 percent FSBO sales in the 2010 study, the current rate is well below the record high of 20 percent set in 1987. The share of homes sold without professional representation has trended lower since last reaching a cyclical peak, which was 18 percent in 1997.
