As members of the U.S. military return to civilian life, they are often faced with the question - "what now"? Members of the 2012 GBAR Community Service Committee saw this as an opportunity to help these veterans by introducing them to a career in real estate. As many of us know, beginning any new career can be intimidating and, at times, costly. For this reason, the Community Service and Member Benefits Committees recommended to the GBAR Board of Directors a waiver of the local portion of REALTOR® dues. In addition, they urged support for a similar policy by the Massachusetts Association of REALTORS® in the form of a waiver of state dues, for a period of up to 23 months. I am happy to announce that GBAR/GBREB and MAR have agreed to waive dues for the year in which a qualified individual (U.S. military veterans, active duty military personnel, and those actively serving as reserves for a branch of the U.S. armed services) makes application, plus the subsequent calendar year. Although we have yet to gain full support from the National Association of REALTORS®, we are pleased with this first step and hopeful that with this initiative we will be able to provide guidance and a career opportunity to those that have dedicated several years of their life to protecting our beautiful home, and the freedoms we enjoy as a nation.
