Dues Waiver Available to Active Duty U.S. Military & Vets

Effective for 2013, both the Greater Boston and Massachusetts Associations of REALTORS® (MAR) have approved a dues waiver for U.S. military veterans, actively enlisted members of the armed services, and those serving as active reserves within a branch of the military. This supplements policies previously approved that provide a waiver of local, state and national REALTOR® dues for active duty military personnel and their spouses.

Under the new policies implemented by GBAR and MAR, qualified individuals will have the local and state portions of their association dues waived during the year in which they make application for membership, plus the subsequent calendar year. To be eligible for the dues waiver, veterans must provide written documentation of honorable discharge, while active enlisted military and those on active reserve status must provide the required personal information (date of birth and SS#) to allow their status to be confirmed with the U.S. government.

The goal of this new policy initiative is to ease entry into the real estate profession for current and former members of the U.S. military through a reduction in upfront financial costs to join the REALTOR® organization. It was initially proposed by the GBAR Community Service Committee and also recommended by the Membership Benefits Committee.

Notably, new member applicants within all three military classifications will be required to pay the applicable entrance fee which covers the cost of attendance at our association’s mandatory New Member Orientation course. Also, qualified vets and active reservists will be required to pay dues to the National Association of REALTORS®, which annually total $155 for agents (but are pro-rated on a monthly basis), as the NAR Board of Directors has only approved a waiver of dues for actively duty military personnel to date.
